India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has marked himself in the record book of Test cricket history on the fourth day of the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur. Jadeja achieved the impressive milestone of 300 Test match wickets when Khaled Ahmed fell off Bangladesh. This excellence although underscoring the bowling prowess simultaneously also marks him as the first Indian and Asian to have achieved the double of 3,000 runs and 300 wickets in Test cricket.
Jadeja achievement makes him just the third Indian player to date to attain this rare double-the first two being the legendary Kapil Dev and the brilliant Ravichandran Ashwin. What makes a huge difference between Jadeja and those two greats is the quickness with which he achieved it. While Kapil and Ashwin were phenomenal in their own rights, Jadeja attained the feat in fewer matches and that further underlines his rapid rise in the cricketing world.
As far as the international cricketing context is considered Jadeja achievement places him second in the world rankings to reach the milestone of 300 wickets. The record holder of this is England great Ian Botham. who achieved it in just 72 matches. Jadeja however reached this landmark in the 73rd Test match paving his way to cricket elite all-rounders.
Jadeja becomes the seventh Indian bowler in history to take 300 wickets. The feat was achieved after bowling into the innings 17,428 balls. He is the second fastest Indian bowler to reach this number after Ravichandran Ashwin. who achieved the milestone after bowling 15,636 balls. This comparison alone shows not only Jadeja artistry but his stamina and strategic acumen on the field, apart from whatever else he brings to the game.
A notable number of Indian bowlers with a record of more than 300 Test wickets at their names include some of the best ever the game has seen. Anil Kumble leads the lot and tops the list, bagging 619 wickets in tests. Then comes Ashwin with 524 wickets, Kapil Dev with 434, Harbhajan Singh with 417, Ishant Sharma with 311 and Zaheer Khan also with 311. The inclusion of Jadeja among these great players speaks a lot for the contribution he made for the Indian cricket team. The match came alive when Bangladesh Mominul Haque made history this time with Jadeja.
Mominul was only the second Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century on Indian soil and played a great unbeaten knock of 107 runs off 194 balls that kept the Bangladeshi innings together as they managed to score 233 runs before getting bowled out. Mominul displayed great patience and temperament while playing his innings as many as 16 fours and one six resulted.
It wasn’t just a personal milestone for Mominul but also a big milestone for Bangladeshi cricket. The youngster attained the 13th Test century by playing a beautiful sweep of Ravichandran Ashwin to include himself in the list of Mushfiqur Rahim-the only other Bangladeshi who has scored a century against India. This feat puts Mominul in stature as one of Bangladesh key players in the Test team. Both these tales of Jadeja and Mominul performances are test cricket in all ways.
Jadeja is a cricketer with all-round skills who has been a stanch pillar for India campaigns. whereas Mominul innings represent the solidity of Bangladeshi cricket as it develops in international competitions. In the win of this Test, they are special because Test cricket is full of such multi-layered stories where individual achievements go hand in hand with those of the entire team
Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja Mimic Jasprit Bumrah Bowling Action
This was the funny incident which occurred just before the match began at Green Park Stadium immediately after India captain Rohit Sharma had opted to bowl first under overcast conditions. When the players were going through their routine warm-up exercise, Ten Doeschate came on thinking it would be another session of ground work and preparation. Little did he know what those two Kohli and Jadeja had in store for him. Even the two star players who have a competitive spirit about them could not resist to lightly mock Bumrah signature bowling style.
It was simply too much for Ten Doeschate to digest-the sight of Kohli and Jadeja two of the biggest names of the game literally humorously recreating some unique movements that have made Bumrah the world leading fast bowler. He couldn’t help but stifle his laughter not even stopping when he covered his face with a baseball glove as if that could help him regain composure. In international cricket, moments like these are the thing, and such levity is important in an environment of such high stakes when focus can prove too intense to bear. Kohli antics show that teamwork requires this bonding level of humor; Jadeja showed that jokes or not teammates have to love their game.
The match began on a different note as some bad light followed by heavy rain disrupted play before tea on the first day. By the time the umpires called for early stumps, Bangladesh was at 107 for 3. Mominul Haque, who had made 40 runs and Mushfiqur Rahim on six were batting when dark clouds closed in to reduce visibility and the players went off the field after lunch.
Weather conditions were not just a concern for the players but also raised questions about their implications for the match specially for former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, who recently said he would retire from international cricket shortly before this Test. Shakib might have been playing the final match of his international cricket career. He made the contest even more emotional as his presence on the field evoked every teammate and fan to think about his contribution to Bangladeshi cricket.
As rain pounded at the covers, officials had little option but to postpone play for the day and lay the covers out on the pitch since more downpours were forecasted over northern Indian city. A disappointing turn of events for the two teams specially for the hosts India. who led the two-match series 1-0 and had chosen to bowl in favorable conditions.
Before the rains arrived, Indian fast bowler Akash Deep had impressed enough to make it all the more valid for Rohit Sharma to have elected to bowl first. Deep took two key wickets during the initial hour, sending opening batsman Zakir Hasan back without scoring and getting Shadman Islam lbw for 24 runs. That he would be able to seam it up against left-handed batsmen made it clear that conditions were difficult and Bangladesh batsmen were effectively put on the back foot right at the start of their innings.
