It is believed that observing this vratam brings blessings from Varalakshmi , a form of Goddess Lakshmi, who is revered as the giver of boons. The festival is significant for seeking the well-being of the family, including the husband and children. According to Hindu beliefs, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day is considered as powerful as praying to Ashtalakshmi, the eight goddesses representing love, wealth, strength, peace, fame, pleasure, earth, and learning.

The Varalakshmi Vratam is widely celebrated in states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Maharashtra.It is marked by great enthusiasm and devotion. In some states, it is even recognized as an optional holiday due to its popularity.
Rituals
Preparations for Varalakshmi Vratam begin on the Thursday before the festival. The essentials for the puja are gathered a day ahead. On the day of the vratam, women wake up early, ideally during Brahma Muhurtham (just before sunrise), and prepare for the puja.
Clean and Decorate: The house and puja area are cleaned, and a beautiful kolam (rangoli) is made.
Prepare the Kalasha: A silver or bronze pot is cleaned, smeared with sandalwood paste, and adorned with a swastika symbol. The pot is then filled with water or raw rice, along with a lime, coins, betel nut, and five types of leaves. Some regions also use turmeric, black beads, mirrors, or small black bangles. The Kalasha is covered with a clean cloth and mango leaves, with a coconut on top. A picture of Goddess Lakshmi is placed on the coconut, making the Kalasha symbolic of the goddess.
Perform the Puja: The Kalasha is placed on a bed of rice. The puja begins with the worship of Lord Ganesha and continues with recitations of hymns like the ‘Lakshmi Sahasranamam.’ Special sweets, including Pongal in some regions, are prepared and offered as prasad. An aarti is performed, and women tie a yellow thread around their wrists.
Post-Puja Rituals: On the following Saturday, the Kalasha is dismantled, and its contents are sprinkled around the house. The rice used in the puja is mixed with the household rice.
