The Indian government honored her with the Padma Shri in 2009, and France awarded her the Order of Arts and Letters in 2012. During the 2000s and 2010s, she was frequently hailed as “the most beautiful woman in the world” by the media.
Rai made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam’s 1997 Tamil film Iruvar and also debuted in Hindi cinema with Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya the same year. Her breakthrough came with the Tamil romantic drama Jeans (1998)which was then the most expensive Indian film.
Rai’s success continued with acclaimed performances in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic dramas Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Devdas (2002), both of which earned her Filmfare Awards for Best Actress.

Aishwarya Rai was born on November 1, 1973 into a Tulu-speaking Hindu family in Mangalore Karnataka. Her father Krishnaraj Rai who passed away on March 18, 2017, was an army biologist while her mother, Vrinda, is a housewife.
She has an older brother Aditya Rai an engineer in the merchant navy. Aditya co-produced Rai’s film Dil Ka Rishta (2003) and her mother co-wrote the script. Fluent in Tulu, Hindi, and English from a young age, Rai’s family later moved to Mumbai due to her father’s job transfer.
In Mumbai, she attended Arya Vidya Mandir High School and spent a year at Jai Hind College before transferring to D. G. Ruparel College in Matunga where she achieved 90 percent in her Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams.
Rai described her academic journey noting that despite consistently ranking first in school a significant ego blow came in the 10th grade when she placed seventh or eighth in her ICSE board exams.
During her teens Rai trained in classical dance and music for five years with a particular interest in Bharatanatyam. Although she initially pursued a career in medicine her passion for zoology led her to consider becoming an architect.
She enrolled at Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture but eventually left her studies to pursue modeling. Her path to prominence began when a college photograph of her went viral leading photographers Gautam Rajadhyaksha and Farrokh Chothia to approach her for advertisements.
