Bangladesh’s New Interim PM Nobel Laureate economist Muhammad Yunus is expected to return to Bangladesh on Thursday, according to Dhaka Tribune. Yunus is scheduled to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 2:10 p.m. on an Emirates flight from Dubai, provided there are no delays.

He is returning to take on the role of head of the interim government after meeting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The official oath-taking ceremony for Yunus, proposed as the interim government head, is set to take place the following day.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Yunus Centre congratulated the students who played a pivotal role in achieving the Second Victory Day and called for peace. The statement urged the public to avoid violence and to focus on building a better future for the country.

As authorities work to restore order, Army Chief Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that the interim government will be sworn in around 8 p.m. on Thursday, with an advisory council possibly consisting of 15 members. The armed forces will support Yunus, who is currently in Paris and heading to Dhaka, following the resignation and departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after violent anti-government protests led by the Students Against Discrimination movement.

Khaleda Zia, chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former prime minister, who was recently released from house arrest, echoed Yunus’s call for “love and peace” to rebuild the nation, rather than anger or revenge.

Following Hasina’s ousting, there have been attacks on businesses and homes owned by Hindus, who are perceived by some in Bangladesh as having been close to her administration. In response, several hundred Bangladeshi nationals, mostly Hindus, have gathered at various points along the India-Bangladesh border, according to Amit Kumar Tyagi, deputy inspector general of India’s Border Security Force (BSF).

Yunus is returning to Bangladesh to assume his new role as interim leader after an overseas trip, appealing to the nation to stay calm and prepare to rebuild after the end of Hasina’s 16-year tenure.

Bangladesh is poised to welcome a new interim government today after weeks of intense student protests that led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus is set to lead the new administration. The oath-taking ceremony for the new government will take place at 8 pm, with President Mohammed Shahabuddin presiding over the event, as announced by Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman at a press conference. According to Dhaka Tribune, Zaman said Dr Yunus is expected to arrive in Bangladesh around 2:10 pm and arrangements have been made for 400 people. Dr Yunus is in Paris, where he has been undergoing medical treatment. relating to the size of the interim government, Zaman said, “I believe it might initially consist of around 15 members.But one or two more individuals may be added.”

Indian visa centres in Bangladesh closed until further notice

The Indian visa application centres in Bangladesh will be closed for an Unknown period due to unrest in the neighbouring country, which forced Sheikh Hasina to resign as Prime Minister and flee the country.

The online visa application portal for India now displays a notice statin, “All IVACs will be closed until further notice due to the unstable situation. Future application dates will be communicated via SMS, and applicants are asked to pick up their passports on the next working day.”

On Wednesday, New Delhi evacuated non-essential staff and their families from its High Commission and consulates in Bangladesh due to the volatile situation. Despite this, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka is still operational, with a team of senior Indian diplomats remaining in the country.India has a High Commission in the capital city Dhaka and 4 assistant high commissions- Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna.

There are approximately 19,000 Indian nationals currently in the country, including around 9,000 students. Most of these students had already returned to India in July following an advisory from the Indian government.The situation in Bangladesh has seen significant political upheaval following the resignation and departure of the former PM Hasina.Hasina, who had been in power for over two decades, left the country on August 5 amid widespread protests.The protests initially started over the issue of civil service job quotas but escalated into demands for Hasina to step down.
