Delhi-NCR rains Heavy rain lashes parts of Delhi; waterlogging prompts traffic advisory
Heavy rainfall struck the national capital on Tuesday morning, causing significant disruptions across major traffic routes. Areas such as Najafgarh Phirni Road, Kashmere Gate, ISBT, Ashram, and ITO experienced severe waterlogging, leading to chaos and delays. The Delhi Police issued a travel advisory urging commuters to steer clear of heavily affected roads like Nigambodh Ghat, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, Mangi Bridge, and Rohtak Road, as localized flooding persisted.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that this heavy downpour was expected to continue, with forecasts predicting scattered light rain throughout the week. Despite the heavy showers, which hit various parts of the city, the IMD reported that rain would remain sporadic, with localized activity likely throughout the day.
In response to the waterlogging, the Delhi Traffic Police implemented roadblocks at Minto Bridge, rerouting traffic through DDU Marg and the Outer Circle of Connaught Place. The IMD highlighted that while some regions experienced intense rainfall, such as 72.4mm at Ridge Station in North Delhi between 5:30 am and 8:30 am, other areas also recorded substantial precipitation. For instance, Pitampura in West Delhi saw 57mm, Delhi University received 45mm, Mayur Vihar 39mm, Najafgarh 35mm, and Lodhi Road recorded 25.6mm. Safdarjung, a key weather station in Delhi, measured 28.7mm over a span of three hours.
The unusual weather pattern was attributed to the monsoon trough’s position over Delhi, which was enhanced by southwesterly winds bringing moisture from the Arabian Sea. Additionally, a local weak western disturbance, interacting with these moist winds, contributed to the intensity of the rainfall.
August has proven exceptionally wet this year, with rainfall recorded on all days except August 3. So far, Delhi has accumulated 240.2mm of rain, making this August the wettest since 2013, which had 321.4mm. The IMD’s forecast suggests that light rain will persist, continuing the trend of frequent precipitation throughout the week.
