Saumya Sahni has reacted to the pricing of Diljit Dosanjh's Dil-Luminati Tour India tickets.
Tickets for the India leg of Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati Tour sold out within minutes on Thursday. In response to the high ticket prices Mumbai-based comedian and social media influencer Saumya Sahni posted a video on Friday criticizing Dosanjh for charging such high prices. She argued that Diljit Dosanjh has no right to impose these costs on his Indian fans many of whom she claimed are financially strained or unemployed. Sahni’s comments reflect her concern that the steep ticket prices are inaccessible for a significant portion of Dosanjh’s fan base.
'Koi haq nahi banta' :
Saumya shared her thoughts in a video and text that sparked a discussion about the accessibility of concerts for middle-class audiences in India. She expressed frustration with the high ticket prices for concerts by Indian artists, suggesting that charging ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 per concert in India is unreasonable especially given the economic conditions.
She explained that many Indian fans have limited financial resources, with inadequate employment opportunities and very few entertainment options available to them. For such fans, seeing their favorite artist perform in their native language is a rare and significant experience.
Saumya argued that when artists perform in multiple cities they have the opportunity to do more shows in each city which could help bring down ticket prices and make their performances more accessible to a broader audience.
Saumya also highlighted the disparity between ticket prices for international and local events. She noted that while international artists often charge $100 to $150 per ticket for their shows, these prices are often justified by the costs associated with large-scale productions and the higher demand.
In contrast she felt that Indian artists, who may not face the same production costs or financial pressures should be more considerate and adjust their pricing to make their shows affordable for Indian fans.
In her video she questioned the logic of charging such high prices when a concert could be an event that families and children could attend. She remarked on how much money artists make from international tours and suggested that they could afford to lower their prices for domestic shows.
By doing so they could show support for their local fan base and help bridge the gap between their international success and their home audience.
Saumya’s caption reflected her late-night contemplation about class issues, emphasizing her concern about the affordability of cultural experiences for middle-class families in India.
She used the phrase “₹15K for a concert? In this economy???? In this country?” to underscore her point about the inaccessibility of such high-priced events in the current economic climate.
Overall Saumya’s message was a call for artists to be more empathetic and adjust their pricing structures to reflect the economic realities faced by many of their fans.
She suggested that artists could use their success and earnings from international shows to make their performances more affordable at home thus demonstrating a commitment to their local audience and supporting broader access to cultural events.
Reactions to the video :
Many people felt that Saumya’s evaluation was quite accurate. One Instagram user commented on her video “He’ll realize this when he’s on stage and no one is singing along. Another user remarked, “₹500 is the highest amount I’d be willing to spend.
Since it’s more expensive than that I won’t be going. I’ll just watch it on YouTube instead. Another comment stated, “As someone from the middle class, I didn’t expect Diljit to be so focused on fame and money.
Someone else added, “This is actually a fair point. Nirvana, for example, always kept their ticket prices very low so that their true fans could attend, not just those who could afford the higher prices.
Another user remarked “Diljit could easily sell out multiple stadiums in each city, but it seems like money is more important than his fanbase. I didn’t expect this.
