The film failed to replicate the massive success of the 2019 film Joker
The eagerly anticipated sequel by Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie a Deux, which would eventually be a musical, opened on June 2. The film is accumulating more positive international box office collections, with an estimated global tally of around $140 million.
The U.S. domestic forecast, however ranges between $55 million and $60 million, spread over 4,000 theaters that include premium formats like IMAX and PLF. This is down from where it was three weeks ago, when it opened at $70 million domestically, according to Variety.
Joker: Folie a Deux opened in India on October 2 and collected ₹5 crore nett in its opening day, reports industry tracker Sacnilk. The English language occupancy of Joker was seen at 22.70% on Wednesday, different rates as across different formats. IMAX 2D topped the lot, obviously, at 64.58%, followed by 2D screens at 43.32%.
This suggested that other formats, be it ICE, 4DX and all standard 2D screens, accounted for a minority percentage in the range of 40%.
With enough hype surrounding its release, the sequel, however, couldn’t reach the same kind of box office splendor that went with its predecessor, the 2019 film Joker, that recorded an incredible worldwide amount of $1.07 billion and turned out to be the second highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
The first part, with 11 Academy Award nominations, two in wins: Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.
In South Korea, Joker: Folie a Deux opens on 1 October but gains $1.3 million as opening day. The movie opens 4 October in the United States. This, claims a report of Variety, puts the studio at a $140 million global debut over the weekend opening.
Directed by Todd Phillips and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, with Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz.
Although the opening weekend domestic prediction for the first film was $80 million, it ended up making $96.2 million and above its forecast of $155 million worldwide, drawing in a total of $248.2 million over its 2019 run.
International release of Joker: Folie a Deux began its major roll out yesterday on Wednesday in 14 key markets that also included France and Italy. The film will further open in 45 more territories on Thursday, the big markets among those include Germany, Australia, Brazil and Mexico.
Friday releases are planned in Spain and the UK which gives the feel that it’s a staged approach that the movies take toward getting better box office figures and good performances.
While the first wave of reception and box office results show that the road ahead for Joker: Folie a Deux will be promising, comparisons with its predecessor show that the expectations will be high for the sequel.
Besides mesmerizing through its gripping narrative and powerful performances, the first film was also critical acclaim, thus stamping its place in cinematic history.
While it makes its progress further into the international markets, everyone is eager to see how this sequel will go about relative to the initial one.
Taking all things into consideration, Joker: Folie a Deux has started on a promising note with big international collections and a strategic release schedule that seems to cash in on the buzz around the film.
When it hits more markets and territories, industry analysts and fans will track the anticipation built around its performance. The fate of the movie will be determined by whether or not it connects well enough to build up from the first Joker.
Netizens flood social media with their reviews of Joker 2
As Folie a Deux hit screens in India and other countries, opinions about it began pouring in to social media sites X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. A user commented: “Many years ago, I did a version of this as a parody; I never thought I’d see a Joker musical.”
Another shared their thoughts, saying, “Absolutely.”. I told my wife whilst watching that it feels all too familiar. And then suddenly a bell rang out in the head-I started looking up comparisons and it feels like plagiarism, even features the same actor in inverse role.
A third user reflected on the paradox of audience reaction, saying, “Regardless of how well the movie is made, I always find it amusing how many people complain that ‘filmmakers don’t take risks anymore,’ yet this is the kind of discourse that arises almost every time a film does take a big risk.”
These reactions vividly indicate the polarized opinion about the subject matter and are manifestations of the conflict between the opinion about the perception of the audience’s opinions and creative expression in cinematic art.
The artists with innovative ideas and creativity in their work involve the audience in debate over the cinematic nature of risk-taking creativity.
