Following the blockbuster success of the 2019 live-action The Lion King, the visually stunning live-action prequel Mufasa: The Lion King is set to be released on December 20, 2024. This film explores the origins of the iconic lion king, offering fans a deeper look into his legendary story.

The Telugu version of the movie will feature superstar Mahesh Babu as the voice of Mufasa, bringing his unique charisma to the role. Industry stalwarts Brahmanandam and Ali will also reprise their beloved roles as Pumbaa and Timon, respectively ensuring continuity and familiar charm for Telugu audiences. The excitement is building as the Telugu trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King is scheduled to be launched on Monday, August 26, 2024. Fans can look forward to a fresh, vibrant take on the classic story, enriched by the talents of renowned voices from the Telugu film industry.

Mufasa: The Lion King, the prequel to the 1994 movie The Lion King will hit theatres on December 20

On Wednesday Walt Disney Studios India announced that actor Mahesh Babu will voice Mufasa in the Telugu version of the upcoming Disney film Mufasa: The Lion King.

On X, they wrote, “Bringing the supreme king of the jungle to life. Excited to present superstar @urstrulyMahesh as the voice of Mufasa in Telugu. Watch the Telugu trailer releasing on Monday. The post featured a Telugu poster of the film alongside a picture of Mahesh Babu.

A prequel to the 1994 animated classic The Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King delves into the origin story of Simba’s father, Mufasa. The film chronicles his journey from a young, orphaned lion cub to a wise and benevolent leader, offering a deeper look into his rise to kingship and the experiences that shaped him.

Helmed by Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King will explore the early life of Mufasa, focusing on his upbringing alongside his brother Scar who later becomes his adversary. The film features Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. voicing the younger versions of Mufasa and Scar respectively. Lin-Manuel Miranda has composed the background score adding his distinctive musical touch to the film. The voice cast also includes John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon and Donald Glover as Simba, bringing together a talented ensemble to bring this prequel to life.

Previously the makers released a teaser for the film which features the mandrill Rafiki saying “This story begins far beyond the mountains and the shadows . A lion was born without a drop of nobility in his blood. This intriguing line hints at the beginning of Mufasa’s journey and sets the stage for his transformation into a noble leader.

Mahesh Babu was last seen in Guntur Kaaram, directed by Trivikram Srinivas and featuring Sreeleela, Meenakshi Chaudhary, and Prakash Raj. This film marked Mahesh Babu’s 28th project and included soundtracks by Thaman S, with cinematography handled by Manoj Paramahamsa.

For those unfamiliar, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will voice Mufasa in the Hindi version of the film. His sons, Aryan Khan and AbRam Khan, will lend their voices to Simba and young Mufasa, respectively, adding a personal touch to the Hindi adaptation.

Mahesh Babu filmography

Mahesh Babu, born on August 9, 1975, is an Indian actor, producer, media personality and philanthropist known for his work in Telugu cinema. One of the highest-paid actors in Indian cinema he made his debut at the age of four in the 1979 film Needa. He continued to act as a child in various films many of which starred his father, Krishna.

Following his role as the titular protagonist in Balachandrudu (1990) while still a child Mahesh Babu took a break from acting to focus on his education. He returned to the screen in an adult lead role with the 1999 film Rajakumarudu earning the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut.

His career faced stagnation until hits like Murari (2001) Okkadu (2003) and Athadu (2005) brought him widespread fame. In 2006, he starred as a gangster in the action-thriller Pokiri, directed by Puri Jagannadh. The film became the highest-grossing Telugu film of all time and solidified Babu’s status as a “superstar” according to Vogue India.
