The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has released revised stipend guidelines for medical trainees across accredited institutions. These updates ensure fair compensation for trainees, based on their course and year.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced updated stipend guidelines for medical trainees. Accredited hospitals and medical institutions are now required to adhere to these guidelines, which detail stipend amounts based on the trainee’s year and course. According to the new guidelines:
- For post-MBBS DNB (Broad Speciality) courses, first-year trainees will receive a stipend of ₹35,000, which increases to ₹37,000 in the second year and ₹39,000 in the third year.
- Trainees in post-diploma DNB (Broad Speciality) programs will receive ₹37,000 in their first year and ₹39,000 in their second year.
Trainees across various institutions, including private hospitals, government institutions, railway hospitals, ESIC facilities, Central PSUs, Central Autonomous Bodies, and Central Government hospitals, can find the detailed stipend structure on the NBEMS website.
The guidelines also state that hospitals must periodically adjust stipends to reflect any changes mandated by state or central government authorities. Institutions are allowed to pay trainees more than the minimum stipend set by NBEMS, and if accommodation is provided, it should not result in a reduction of the stipend.
The hospital will have to pay the NBEMS Trainees a Basic Stipend in Accordance to any of the following applicable Categories:
First year medical trainee enrolled in post MBBS DNB (Broad Speciality) course is entitled for a stipend of Rs 35,000. Second year trainee will get Rs 37,000, while medical trainee enrolled in third year will get a stipend of Rs 39,000.
First year trainee enrolled in Post Diploma DNB (Broad Speciality) course will get Rs 37,000 while the one enrolled in second year will get Rs 39,000. For candidates enrolled in 2 years Diploma (Post MBBS- Broad Speciality) course will be entitled for Rs 35,000 for first year and Rs 37,000 for second year.
For DrNB (Super Speciality) courses, candidates will be entitled for a stipend of Rs 41,000 for first year, 43,000 for the second year and 45,000 for third year. Trainee enrolled in first year FNB Courses will get Rs 41,000 and Rs 43,000 for second year. Medical trainees from private or state government hospitals/medical institutions, railway, ESIC, Central PSUs, Central Autonomous and Central Government hospitals and medical institutions can visit the official website of the NBEMS to check the details of the stipend.
The NBEMS also added that in order to maintain the parity to basic stipend guidelines, the rate of stipend needs to be periodically revised by the respective hospitals/medical institutions in accordance to the revision of stipend made by the respective state governments or by the central government/authorities from time to time.

The notice also mentioned that 4th, 5th & 6th year trainees of a Direct 6 year NBEMS courses shall be paid stipend equal to 1st , 2nd & 3rd year trainees of a Super specialty course respectively provided that they clear the DNB Part-I Examination.
It further said that NBEMS-accredited hospitals are free to provide NBEMS trainees a higher monthly stipend than the mandated stipend. It is also preferable that the hospital provide accommodation for their trainees in addition to their stipend. However, the hospital will not lower the trainees’ stipends in lieu of providing housing.
NBEMS releases new stipend guidelines, DNB post-diploma candidates to get 5% increase
According to the official notification, revised NBEMS stipend guidelines are as follows:
- Paying stipend to the NBEMS trainees by the accredited hospitals/medical institutions is compulsory.
- According to the NBEMS stipend policy, the hospital shall have to pay the NBEMS trainees a basic stipend in accordance with any of the following applicable categories:

The notification adds that in order to maintain the parity to basic stipend guidelines, the rate of stipend needs to be periodically revised by the respective hospitals/medical institutions in accordance to the revision of stipend made by the respective state governments or by the central government/authorities from time to time.
- NBEMS accredited hospitals are at liberty to pay NBEMS trainees a monthly stipend more than the prescribed stipend.
- It is also desirable that the hospital provide accommodation to its trainees in addition to their stipend. the hospital shall not reduce the trainees’ stipend in lieu of providing accommodations.
Accredited hospitals and medical institutions are required to pay NBEMS trainees the stipend as prescribed or according to the respective State Government policy, whichever is higher. To increase consistency, hospitals and institutions must periodically revise stipend rates in alignment with adjustments made by the State or Central Government authorities. Additionally, hospitals are encouraged to offer stipends above the prescribed amounts and provide accommodation to trainees. the stipend must not be reduced in lieu of providing housing.
