Since making his film debut in 2010 Rao has appeared in over 30 movies and garnered several prestigious awards including a National Film Award four Filmfare Awards and an Asia Pacific Screen Award. In 2017 he was featured on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list.
Rao’s acting journey began after he studied at the Film and Television Institute of India. He made his debut with the anthology film Love Sex Aur Dhokha in 2010.

He followed this with supporting roles in Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2 and Talaash The Answer Lies Within (both 2012). His career breakthrough came in 2013 with critically acclaimed performances in Kai Po Che! and Shahid.

His portrayal of Shahid Azmi a lawyer in Shahid earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.
Rao continued to build on his success with notable supporting roles in Queen (2014), Aligarh (2015), and Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017).

His performance in Bareilly Ki Barfi earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He further established himself with leading roles in independent films like Trapped (2016) and Newton (2017).

Despite facing a few commercial setbacks with some underperforming films Rao achieved a significant commercial success in 2024. He took on the title role in the biopic Srikanth which was well-received and reprised his role in the sequel Stree 2.
